Description: The Kaffeesatz is
a sleek sans serif family of four weights. Oddly, the
bolder the font gets, the more condensed it gets. Two fonts are designed
to
be used together, Thin/Regular and Light/Bold, respectively. The light
versions are supposed to be modern sans serif title, while the bold
resembles 1920’s black display fonts.

His life in brief: I grew up
in Ethiopia from 1988 to 1997. There I got in touch with reggae music,
and still today I run a small but uprising reggae sound system. I started
publishing stupid self programmed Windows-tools on my website in 1999,
but in the process of webdesign I became interested in the design aspect
more rather than the programming aspect. After finishing high school
and the obligatory year of civil service I started studying graphic
design at the Bauhaus university in Weimar, where I started designing
typefaces and live until the day.
Kaffeesatz: how ? why ?
The idea behind it was to express the love and addiction to good espresso
coffee. Thats behind the similarity between the Kaffeesatz Bold
and the
1920’s coffee house display typefaces. The Kaffeesatz is Jan’s
very first
finished typeface. He has played around with many ideas before but never
finished them. What he learned from it was that handdrawing of single
glyphs
helps a lot in the design process. The curves just don’t look on screen
as
they do on paper. Also the human hand can draw much smoother curves
on paper
with a pencil, as opposed to vectors on the computer screen.
